At Street Level: the fragility and aesthetics of technology

The inherent tension between people and our natural world in our techno-society is evident at street level. Here objects take on an incongruence that appears to break down, morph or take on multiple meanings. I am drawn to this ambiguity of meaning, and in my images, I seek to show not what it is but what it has become. I am increasingly seeing that scale of presentation helps to convey a more accurate description of the affected object. In addition, portraying what these objects have become requires a degree of abstraction in both line and colours. In this way, I draw out the essences of what I formally present in my images.

Our highly technical world simply has an untechnical, chaotic and crass relationship with the natural world and often people. The truth emerges at the point where technical savvy peters out, the intersection of the natural world and urban culture. It is here where I choose to look for my images and gain an understanding. This is where a gripping beauty holds me to the fire.
